Tips to Avoiding a DUI on The Holiday Weekend

July 3, 2021

With the 4th of July weekend in full swing, many Americans will be celebrating this holiday with friends and family. While this is definitely the time of year to be enjoying your time with those closest to you, our DUI attorneys at The Town Law want to take this opportunity to highlight the need to exercise caution when drinking this weekend. Here are a few things to keep in mind during this weekend.

It Is Never an Option to Drink and Drive

This may seem obvious but many instances arise when people who are out celebrating and drinking forget how much they have drank and feel that they are "okay to drive". Never assume you are okay to drive after drinking. Even if you have 1 or 2 beers, you can still get jammed up with a DUI charge if the police determine that you are impaired.

Uber, Lyft, Designated Drivers Are Your Best Friends This Weekend

If you do plan on drinking, remember it is a lot cheaper to pay for someone to drive you around as opposed to paying all the costs associated with a DUI.

Dui Checkpoints Are More Prominent This Time of Year

Even if you are celebrating the holiday close to where you are staying and you think about driving after consuming alcohol remember that most DUIs occur when people are within close proximity to their home. We cannot stress to you how many times people have called our firm with a DUI charge and the first thing they say is "I was so close to making it home, I was just around the corner!" Also police are patrolling more this time of year due to the fact that they know many people will be drinking and driving. DUI checkpoints will be set up and if you are caught drinking and driving at a checkpoint, you will most likely be charged with a DUI.

Do Not Be the "Good Samaritan Driver"

It is also important to note that you should not drive if your friend is drunker than you are. Many times people, with good intentions, will drive their friends or family members home because they appear to be heavily intoxicated and not safe to drive. What can happen however, is that the person who decides to drive, while being less impaired than their passengers, are still intoxicated and subject to being charged with a DUI. Remember, be smart, use other means of transportation and do not forget that if you have been drinking, you should NEVER operate a vehicle.
